The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has informed the National Green Tribunal (NGT) that it has issued a show-cause notice to stop operations of Flipkart and Patanjali Beverage. The CPCB said that they are not registered under it and they have not answered her questions.
The CPCB in its report submitted to the NGT said that it has taken action due to non-compliance with the provisions of the Plastic Waste Management (Amendment) Act 2018. Under this, these units were issued show-cause notices under section five of the Environment (Protection) Act 1986 for ceasing operations and payment of compensation.
The CPCB told the NGT that four companies - Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Private Limited, PepsiCo India Holding Private Limited, Bisleri International Private Limited, and Narishco Beverages Limited - were registered.
However, they have not provided information on the evidence-based assessment of the action plan to fulfill the extended producer responsibility. Their submitted documents are not supported by the State Pollution Control Boards and hence show-cause notices have also been issued to these companies.
Notice to the Center on the application seeking cancellation of the notification regarding groundwater withdrawal
The NGT issued a notice to the Center and the CPCB on the application requesting the cancellation of notification regarding groundwater drainage on the grounds that its commercial use was affecting the flow of rivers and availability of drinking water.
A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel said that the Central Ground Water Authority (CGWA) has been making concessions in groundwater drainage in water-deficient areas by repeatedly issuing notifications. This is the exact opposite of the purpose for which it was founded.
